About the Position:

The Forensic Scientist in the CODIS Laboratory directly impacts the mission of the CLD by performing independent, timely, and accurate analyses of routine and complex offender DNA databasing casework, including CODIS hit confirmations, elimination samples, testifying to conclusions in courts of law, and providing training to criminal justice agencies.

In addition to your salary, you will receive 5% geographic pay.

Salary and Classification:
  • Forensic Scientist 1 – In‑training: Approx. 12 months, $5,011 – $6,735 per month.
  • Forensic Scientist 2 – In‑training: Approx. 18 months, $5,531 – $7,443 per month.
  • Forensic Scientist 3 – In‑training: Approx. 6 months, $6,735 – $9,065 per month.
Our new teammate will be able to:
  • Scientifically analyze CODIS lab databasing samples in routine evidence, and in increasingly non‑routine and complex casework in an area(s) in which they have been validated proficiently and in accordance with established productivity standards.
  • Document and protect CODIS lab samples in accordance with current laboratory procedures.
  • Record and organize observations and data to create a record that explains their analytical work and the conclusions reached in the laboratory report in a legible manner and that allows for technical and administrative review.
  • Interpret and reach scientific conclusions, supported by their data and observations.
  • Report scientific findings in the form of a written forensic laboratory report based on the interpretation of observations and analytical test results.
  • Complete high quality analyses, performed using forensically accepted scientific methods, and in accordance with the current CLD Quality Operations Manual (QOM) and applicable technical procedures.
  • Provide technical review and administrative review of casework.
  • Abide by accreditation criteria.
  • Participate in the proficiency testing program by successfully completing all assigned proficiencies and competencies.
  • Learn and apply laws, policies, and procedures, as specified in the RCW, the WAC, federal regulations, and court rulings as they relate to scientific examination of evidence.
  • Testify in courts of law presenting findings to a jury in a manner that is designed to be readily understood.
  • Maintain competency in casework analyses.
Work Setting, including hazards:

Works in a laboratory setting around chemicals, instrumentation, body fluids and other potentially hazardous materials. This environment includes submitted cases which evolve from traumatic events such as homicide and rape. Stress level can be high due to need to meet deadlines and demand for services.

Schedule (i.e., hours and days):

Standard business hours Monday through Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Travel Requirements:

Travel within and outside the state will be required for court testimony and attendance at meetings and training events.

Tools and Equipment:

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of scientific instruments and equipment utilized by the DNA unit, such as, but not limited to: Thermal Cyclers, Capillary Electrophoresis Genetic Analyzers, Real‑Time PCR DNA Quantitation systems, and centrifuges. Must maintain proficiency with computers, relevant software, and standard office equipment.

Customer Interactions:

Interact with representatives of law enforcement agencies, prosecutors’ offices, and defense attorneys on a regular basis. These interactions may be in person, via telephone, or electronic systems.

Required Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license due to in‑state travel required to complete job duties.
  • A baccalaureate or an advanced degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or forensic science from an accredited institution.
    • Equivalent education/experience at or above the minimum required for the Forensic Scientist level being hired may substitute for the education requirement, on a case by case basis.
    • Coursework in biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology (9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours combined).
    • Coursework in statistics or population genetics.
  • Must attach an unofficial copy of transcript.
