Raytheon is seeking a Meteorological Systems Engineer to support NOAA's Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) program in College Park, MD. The role involves working with cutting‑edge technology as a provider to the National Weather Service and supporting the modernization of NWS products and services across a nationwide network of approximately 160 sophisticated data collection sites linked by a state‑of‑the‑art communications system.

Candidates with strong experience with proprietary weather systems and a Linux background are needed to support the monitor and control functions of the NWS Network Control Facility (NCF). The NCF is a 24x7x365 facility providing Help Desk‑type support and Network Operations services to Weather Forecast Offices, NWS National Centers, and River Forecast Centers.

The ideal candidate will be a highly enthusiastic team member excited about providing front‑line customer support for an operational system and will have the opportunity to directly support the customer in troubleshooting this critical system.

What You Will Do:

Correct site processes and interface system issues, wide‑area network (WAN) problems, and satellite broadcast problems.

Independently detect and troubleshoot failures

Interact with forecast office personnel and third‑party vendors for site support.

Accurately document all actions taken and provide customer feedback.

What You Will Learn:

Build and/or implement a daily operations plan using complex software and hardware systems.

Obtain and maintain technical knowledge of a large repository of formal procedures and accurately select and apply the correct procedure(s) depending on the specific scenario at hand.

Obtain and apply technical knowledge on various hardware subsystems.

Document discrepancies as they occur, implement workarounds and contingency plans to minimize impacts of system anomalies.

Qualifications You Must Have:

Must hold, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Meteorology or a closely related STEM field by the start of summer 2026.

This position requires 12 months or less of professional experience (excluding internships).

Ability to apply critical thinking toward problem solving in time‑critical situations.

Works effectively in a team environment.

Ability to work a flexible shift schedule including day, evening/night, and weekends (12‑hour shifts: 4 days working, 4 days off rotation) with occasional presence in the office (about once per week).

Qualifications We Prefer:

• Experience working a rotating shift schedule
• Experience providing/receiving training to/from a wide range of learning/teaching styles
• Working in a virtual team environment
• Knowledge of RedHat Linux
• Knowledge of PostgreSQL
• Knowledge of problem solving, Java, Python
• Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
• Previous internship experience
