The Data and Analytics Unit at Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking a dynamic individual to serve in a contracted role as Sr. Data Visualization Developer. This contract position reports to the Director of Business Intelligence in the Data and Analytics Unit. This role supports the Department in providing analytic and technical skills necessary to innovate, build, and maintain an ever-growing data viz portfolio for DMH. The Sr. Data Visualization Developer applies various research methods to mine, collect, examine, analyze, validate, and organize data to derive insights and present information to support decision-making. This incumbent will also collaborate with the Information Technology Department and the DMH Privacy Office to support the development of the data visualization portfolio ensuring adherence to laws, regulations, and policies. In this role you will be our primary architect for visual storytelling, responsible for designing, developing and deploying enterprise level dashboards. The ideal candidate is a Tableau power user with a deep understanding of data modeling and possesses the versatility to manage and migrate environments in Power BI. The person in this role will be designing the visual interface through which our leadership understands the health of the business. Please Note: This position is not characterized as \"Specialized Training\" for STEM OPT students. /Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):/ * Lead the end-to-end design and development of complex multisource dashboards that are intuitive, performant and scalable. * Serve as the subject matter expert for both Tableau and Power BI advising on the best tool for specific use cases and assisting in cross-platform integration of migrations. * Work closely with data engineers to define requirements for data layers (SQL, Snowflake) ensuring data structures are optimized for visualization performance. * Apply advanced data visualization theory (Gestalt principles, Tufte’s ink-to-data ration) to create clean, professional and accessible user interfaces. * Audit existing workbooks and reports to improve load times, stream calculated fields and optimize LOD expressions and DAX queries. * Establish best practices for data visualization standards, support the maintenance of the Tableau and Power BI online environments, and mentor junior analysts. Preferred Qualifications: * 5 years of professional experience with Tableau desktop/server/cloud. * Proficiency in advanced features (LOD expressions, sets, parameters, data blending, Tableau Prep, and Row-level security) * Power BI proficiency 2 years including a strong understanding of DAX, Power Query (M), and the Power BI online service environment. * Advanced SQL skills, writing complex joints, CTEs and stored procedures. * Experience with data warehousing solutions like Snowflake, Azure and SQL. * Knowledge of scripting languages like Python or R for advanced data preparation and statistical analysis. * Analytical mindset. Proven ability to translate business requirements into clear technical visualization specs. * Experience with UI/UX design tools. * Tableau or Power BI certifications are a plus. * Knowledge of data governance, data quality management concepts and metadata management tools. * Having a portfolio of previous work available for review is a plus.
