Description / Position OverviewThe City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department seeks a Park Guide and Safety Patrol for the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center and Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center at North Cheyenne Cañon Park. In this position you will provide information and outdoor education programming focused on the natural and cultural history of North Cheyenne Cañon and the Pikes Peak Region. You will work in a mountain setting, near waterfalls, massive rock formations, and peaceful creeks. Learn from experienced staff to develop best practices and skills needed to work in the great outdoors.
Work ScheduleAveraging 32 hours per week, some weeks will vary to 24 hours and the fall will be 12 hours. Approximate dates of employment: May 2026 – October 2026. Scheduled hours will vary based on department needs. Total hours worked will not exceed 1,500 annually.
Work LocationHelen Hunt Falls Visitor Center, 3440 N. Cheyenne Canon Rd., 80906
Key Responsibilities- Interact with visitors from around the world
- Operate and maintain the visitor center with team members
- Provide information, wayfinding, and maps for North Cheyenne Cañon Park and surrounding attractions
- Perform trail patrols and guided hikes for visitors around the Helen Hunt Falls area
- Inform visitors of park rules and safety regulations
- Respond to incidents involving injuries; communicate with emergency staff
- Open and close the visitor center; clean restrooms; perform site maintenance
- Oversee adult and teen volunteers
- Other duties as assigned
- High school diploma or GED
- One year of experience in a related field or college‑level coursework in education, outdoor recreation, or natural sciences
- Valid, non‑probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
- Experience working or volunteering in a park or visitor center setting
- Experience creating and delivering interpretive programs
- This seasonal (at-will) position offers benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, including Workers Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA.
- Additional compensation depends on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments. The City offers shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell‑back.
- This position is subject to budget‑required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year and any subsequently approved furloughs.
